Every so often, I get an opportunity to photograph someone whose global reach transcends fame or recognition. Desmond Tutu is one of those people. He is one of those people who truly needs no introduction.
Normally when I cover an event, my mind is more on making an image than what the subjects are talking about. Photographing Desmond Tutu was one of those rare cases where I had to remind myself to keep the camera to my eye. His message was riveting and I found myself wanting to hear more. While millions of people have heard him speak over the years and many of them multiple times, I somehow felt like hearing him was a once in a lifetime opportunity.
I usually don’t put people on pedestals and I’m certainly not starstruck. But in this case, I felt like having the opportunity to meet someone of such quiet importance was a rare treat.
